摘要

In cooperation with the Delft University of Technology structure and residual stresses have been investigated at various locations of an eroded .50 inch gun barrel, using X-ray diffraction techniques. The results obtained show that the eroded surface is characterized by hardening and by a heterogeneous structural composition. The measurements give rise to a non-linear relation at the eroded surface, in contrast to that of the bulk material. Possible causes are discussed. It is recommended to continue the investigation with radiations of different wavelengths in order to obtain more information on the structure and on the stress and hardness gradients.
