Researchers are pursuing development of a new, cost-effective process based on novel oxygen carriers for the separation of oxygen from air. Previous work with such compounds has produced carriers that have impractically short lifetimes. The objective was to explore the synthesis of new carriers with the goal of greatly increasing carrier lifetime. The major focus of the Phase I feasibility program was the synthesis of a number of vicinal diamines. These were then condensed with o-vanillin to form Schiff bases, which were subsequently complexed with cobalt(II) to form the oxygen carriers. A preliminary assessment of the oxygen-binding characteristics of these carriers suggested that long lifetimes could be achieved by using Schiff bases as oxygen carriers.
