Investigation of Surfactants as Stabilizers in Degradation of Poly (Vinyl Chloride)

The thermal non-oxidative degradation of PVC was studied using conductometric and thermogravimetric analysis. Salts of three different fatty acids (e.g., stearic acid, palmitic acid and lauric acid) with lead and metals of group II B were prepared and the effect of the salts on the HCl elimination process involved during degradation was studied. Pb-Cd stearates were found to be the best stablilizer in the thermal degradation of PVC.
