Removal of Oil from Oil-Water Mixtures Using Selective Oil Filtration

The project studied the selective oil filtration (sof) process as an alternative method for removing oil from oily wastewaters or other oil-containing wastes. The sof is similar to ultrafiltration in that microporous membranes are used. Unlike in ultrafiltration, however, oil rather than water is selectively removed by applying a pressure across the membrane. The results show that the sof process will remove free, mechanically dispersed and chemically emulsified oil from oil-water mixtures. Sof did not work for the removal of oil-wet solids, and, prior to filtration, the suspended solids must be removed to prevent membrane fouling.
