Ciguatera Seafood Poisoning

The comprehensive report covers research on ciguatera seafood poisoning conducted between 1980 and 1988. The long term objective of the project was to develop a rapid test for the presence of ciguatoxins in fish prior to processing or distribution. The report includes a comprehensive literature review of ciguatera seafood poisoning, laboratory animal responses to ciguatera toxins, studies of the toxicity of selected dinoflagellates and research on the feasibility of various methodologies to detect the presence of ciguatera toxins in finfish. Immunological methods to detect ciguatoxin were also researched. The method laboratory tested in the study discriminated between ciguatoxic and non-toxic samples. However, the reactions reported do not appear to represent classical antigen antibody interactions, since sera from humans and animals with no exposure to ciguatoxin gave positive reactions with toxic extracts and negative results with nontoxic extracts.
