A new method for calibration of thermal radiometers of the Gardon and Schmidt-Boelter types has been developed. The differences between the method described in the report and the methods previously used is that this method makes it possible to avoid any substantial influence of convective heat transfer to the radiometer. The method uses a spherical calibration furnace, with a water cooled device inserted through a hole in the bottom. The radiometer is mounted inside the water cooled device and is thus protected from the convective effects of the hot furnace gas. It is also screened from some of the radiation. The method makes it possible to calibrate between 10 and 60 kW sq m with a relative inaccuracy of less than 2%. The report describes the equipment used, the verification method and an error analysis. It also gives an understanding of some of the properties of the radiometers that are considered.
