Advances in gas-fired heating technology offer the possibility of improving the technical capability and operating feasibility of gas-fired heat treating furnaces. Ceramic radiant tubes and efficient burner systems allow the extension of controlled atmosphere furnaces into higher operating temperature process applications. Furnace specifications for high temperature gas-fired, ceramic radiant tube furnace have been developed through process studies and laboratory testing under soft vacuum (10 to 250 torr). Critical areas for successful development of the concepted furnace were identified. The improvements developed in the new furnace concept will benefit all types of gas-fired furnaces operating up to 2350 deg F. The improvements are expected in heating and control systems, material handling, furnace design, productivity, operating cost, and product quality.
