Proceedings of the National Symposium on Protection of Wetlands from Agricultural Impacts

A symposium was held 26-29 April 1988 at Colorado State University and was attended by over 150 individuals representing 32 States and Canada. Attendees represented government, consulting, academia, agricultural business, and nonprofit organizations. The purposes were to outline the impacts of agricultural practices on wetlands, examine existing wetland protection mechanisms, and develop wetland protection strategies to ameliorate the impacts not already protected against. The symposium process involved formal oral presentations, regional workgroups, and a national panel discussion. Formal papers focused on four main topics: (1) Agricultural Impacts on Wetlands; (2) National Legislative Wetland Protection Strategies; (3) State/Regional Wetland Protection Strategies; and (4) Management Protection Strategies. These sessions were followed by a guest speech on the agricultural perspective. Next, regional brainstorming workgroups outlined the impacts and developed protection strategies. Lastly, a seven member national panel discussed the issues and strategies from a Washington perspective relative to panel members' backgrounds.
