Improved Acid Electrolytes-The Synthesis and Structure of Fluorine Containing Sulfonic Acids for Fuel Cells. Final Report July 1987-August 1988

Seven new ether containing sulfonyl fluorides (precursors to sulfonic acids) have been prepared from I(CF2)2O(CF2)2SO2F and unsaturated olefins/alkynes. Two new ether sultones were prepared. A more efficient route for preparing ether containing sulfonic acids has been discovered. Additional quantities of mono/di sulfonic acids have been prepared and evaluated by Dr. Ross. Significant results for fuel cell electrolytes have been achieved.
