Glaciated Prairie Wetland Functions and Values: A Synthesis of the Literature

The report provides a current synthesis of the functions of prairie pothole wetlands. Functions discussed include hydrology, nutrient/contaminant entrapment, forage for livestock, and wildlife support. When known, the economic value of these functions is also considered. In general, hydrologic and wildlife functions are optimized when whole wetland complexes remain intact. Once valuated, the value of the hydrological functions of pothole wetlands could possibly dwarf the combined value of all other functions of these wetland systems.
