Service Life of Concrete Structures with Regard to Corrosion of Reinforcement

One of the main deteriorating factors that affect the service life of concrete structures is the corrosion of reinforcement. The technical service life of a structure with regard to the corrosion of reinforcement can be evaluated by means of a mathematical model where the influencing factors are the thickness of the concrete cover, the quality of concrete and environmental conditions. The initiation time of corrosion is governed by the carbonation or chloride penetration process in the concrete cover. The service life is normally considered to be finished when the concrete cover has spalled as a result of corrosion. The service life models provide a basis for the design and quality control of structures with regard to durability. When using the models attention will be directed to the correct factors affecting the service life and long term economy of a building. (Copyright (c) Valtion teknillinen tutkimuskeskus (VTT) 1988.)
