Mechanical Properties of Kerto-Laminated-Veneer-Lumber

The purpose of the research was to study experimentally the mechanical properties of Kerto-Laminated-Veneer-Lumber. Particular emphasis was given to the effect of moisture content on the mechanical property values. Standard tests of wood and plywood were applied to the laboratory experiments. The test specimen were weathered to five different moisture contents ranging from oven dry to soaking wet. The comparison of mechanical properties of Kerto-LVL to spruce revealed several notable differences: Compressive and tensile strengths and stiffnesses are higher in tangential than in the radial direction for Kerto-LVL, which is not the case for spruce. The effect of moisture content on bending and tensile strengths in the grain direction is higher for spruce than for Kerto-LVL. A separate set of moisture reduction factors are proposed for the different mechanical properties. Also the permissible stresses for the missing strength and elastic properties used for design are completed by proposed values.
