Economic Change, Demographic Change and the Composition and Distribution of Disadvantaged Households in the United States

The report presents the results of analyses of the composition and spatial distribution of vulnerable and disadvantaged households in the United States. Drawing on census data for 1960, 1970, and 1980, particularly the Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS), the report documents the incidence of socio-economic disadvantages among persons and households that are, on average, more vulnerable to economic distress. A central feature of these patterns is the persistence of steep gradients between different geographic areas and settings. The problem of central city areas are highlighted, and their characteristics in terms of vulnerable and disadvantaged populations are described in detail.
