Measurement of Mode I and Mode II Strain Energy Release Rates; A Vamas Round Robin Project on Delamination of Composite Materials

A VAMAS 'round robin' program was initiated to study delamination in composite materials. The report concerns the work performed at the NPL in determining Gc values for a variety of test geometries in fracture modes I and II. Materials studied include aligned carbon fiber/epoxy. The glass reinforced materials are considered in both 3 mm and 20 mm thickness. Some comments are made on the test methods and several different analytical techniques are used to evaluate the fracture parameter.
