Notes on the Unsteady Rectilinear Motion of a Perfect Gas VIII General Theory and General Waves in a Homentropic Gas

In this report some classical theory is collected and some results are presented on the unsteady rectilinear flow of a perfect gas. Some general theory is reviewed including the characteristic equations and homentropic flows are considered including the homentropic simple waves. The unusual feature of the presentation is that the Lagrangian variables is used throughout. The homentropic general waves are considered. A detailed discussion is presented of the general solutions of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equations which occur.
