A study was carried out to measure the distance at which subjects could detect sign panels at night. The key independent variables were the color and SIA (specific intensity per unit areas, given in cd/lux/sq m) of the test sign panels. Subjects either drove or rode in a test car on a dark road in a rural area, and indicated by pressing a button when they could detect the sign panels. The result indicate that the colors white, yellow, and blue yielded comparable detection distances/unit SIA. The colors red and orange yielded detection distances approximately equal to the other colors at twice the SIA.
