摘要

The objective of the project is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of six different proprietary bridge deck coatings and linseed oil to protect concrete from the intrusion of chlorides, and also to evaluate the costs associated with purchasing and applying each coating. The six coatings and linseed oil were placed in individual sections of a four-span continuous steel I-beam bridge. The coatings or sealants evaluated are: Sinak Concrete Sealer No. 102, Stop Spall, Horsey Set/WDE, Hydrozo Clear 600, CVI Sealer Primer, and PCM 300. The report describes the method of application, application rates, material and application bid costs, as well as the rapid permeability and chloride content testing performed in the various coating sections. All of the proprietary coatings were far more expensive than linseed oil. Only Hydrozo Clear 600 performed consistently as well or better than linseed oil through the evaluation. Because of its high cost, it is questionable if even Hydrozo Clear 600 would be an economical alternative to linseed oil.
