Evaluation of a Neoprene Latex Modified SAMI (Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer)

The use of a stress absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI) is not a new concept. The SAMI usually consists of a seal coat with a modified asphalt. Numerous applications of asphalt and rubber have been completed by contractors and by PennDOT maintenance forces. The main purpose of this type of installation is to evaluate the ability of a seal coat or modified seal coat to extend the service life of the bituminous overlay to the extent that the method would be economical. To date, no significant differences have been noted.
