Industry Outlook Report: Fishing Industry, Republic of Korea, 1987-1988 (SPR 0404)

The Republic of Korea (ROK) harvested 3.2 million metric tons(t) of fish and shellfish in 1988, down 2.6 percent from its 1987 catch of 3.3 million tons. Of the ROK's four fishery sectors (coastal, deepsea, aquaculture, and inland waters. South Korea's 1988 fishery exports were valued at $2 billion, nearly a 16 percent increase from 1987. Tuna was the most important export commodity in 1988, followed by ark shells, sand eels, groundfish fillets, and flounders. Japan, the largest market for ROK fishery products, imported 68 percent of the total. The United States and Spain were next in importance, purchasing 17 percent and 3 percent, respectively. Korea's 1988 imports of fisheries products increased dramatically in 1988--nearly 40 percent, by quantity, to 300,000 tons. Of this total, over half (155,000 t) were re-exported. Major imports were Alaska pollock, cod, herring, and salmon from the United States, Japan, and Canada.
