A study has been done of methods of designing a very fast, high voltage pulse generator using a pulsed electron beam produced by a microchannel plate electron multiplier (MCP EM), and accelerated across a gap in a transmission line. Among the topics investigated were methods of triggering the MCP EM, the physics of pulse formation at the MCP EM and on the transmission line, ways of coupling the transmission line to loads, and ultimate performance. These investigations show that it may be possible to generate low-jitter pulses as short as 30 picoseconds, with powers in the ten megawatt range. The pulse generator would ultimately be contained in a small vacuum tube, and would require low power to operate. The pulse generator could be used for radar, or to trigger Pockels cells, gated photon detectors, or pulsed electron guns.
