Impact of Incubator Region on the Creation and Survival of New Semiconductor Ventures in the U.S., 1978-1986

The authors investigate whether U.S. regions function as incubators for the successful founding and development of new technology-based ventures. An incubator region is defined as a confluence of industry-specific resources within a geographic area which may be mobilized to create and sustain new ventures in a given industry. The report focuses on resources that support the semiconductor industry in a given region. Using a longitudinal research design, the population studied is all new semiconductor industry ventures founded in the United States between 1978 and 1986. The firms are distributed throughout 18 U.S. regions.
