Field Testing and Commercialization of the Wave Form Analyzer Pulse Generator System. Topical Report November 1986-May 1988

Cathodic protection is one method used to control corrosion on buried pipelines. Monitoring for the effectiveness of impressed current type cathodic protection can give misleading information unless the Infrared (IR)-drop error is eliminated from pipe-to-soil potentials. The report documents the field test and commercialization of a new instrument system which has been designed to provide accurate IR-drop free pipe-to-soil potentials for pipelines under cathodic protection. The new equipment is a WaveForm Analyzer/Pulse Generator System. The field tests were conducted with the cooperation of six natural gas companies diversely spaced throughout the United States. The WFA/PG system was compared to stripchart recorder Off potential interpretations collected during synchronous interruption of all rectifier current sources. The WFA/PG was demonstrated to be an accurate and simple to use system for measuring IR-drop free pipe-to-soil potentials. The production software and hardware design is complete and the equipment is commercially available.
