Signs and Traces is the second volume in a series that grew from the national discussion of recommendations made in Involvement in Learning: Realizing the Potential of American Higher Education. Sponsored and issued by the U.S. Department of Education in 1984, Involvement was the first of the current wave of reports on the status of higher education in the United States, and one that paid considerable attention to the question of how to know what college students learn between matriculation and graduation.
