In Europe, since the 70s, the aquatic macrophyte communities are studied as bioindicators and the Framework Directive 2000/60/EC puts them among the biological elements for assessing the ecological status of running waters. Although the Directive is not centered on the lower catchment, but this is particularly important for achieving good quality conditions of water bodies. The small streams and wetlands, that are reservoirs of biodiversity in an urban environment, become so important by indications of the European Directive, and may be essential to the achievement of the quality of water bodies.
