摘要

Archeological investigations were conducted by Southeast Archeological Center (SEAC) personnel for the Cumberland Gap Tunnel Project (Package 139) in the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park (CUGA) on April 4-22, 1988. The archeological work was divided into two phases; only the first phase has been completed. Phase I involved the survey and testing for the CUGA Visitor Center temporary parking lot, the extension of South Cumberland Drive, and the US Rt. 58 realignment. These investigations resulted in the discovery of five previously unrecorded archeological sites. The Phase II archeological investigations are scheduled for 1990. The report summarizes the investigations and results, as well as the related background research. The background data are included because they provide a framework within which to examine the results of the investigations. The compilation of data on the environment, prehistory, history, and previous archeological investigations in the general area can be used as a reference document should any additional projects be planned for this part of the park.
