Today, many countries are considering the disposal of nuclear waste in geological formations as the most promising solution for permanent waste isolation. An important part of studies on the safety analysis of disposal systems is the assessment of groundwater flow through the repository and the host rock to the accessible environment. For this purpose, often it is necessary to develop mathematical models and numerical computer codes describing the physico-chemical processes involved. HYDROCOIN is an international cooperative study aimed at understanding the various analytical and numerical methods used for describing groundwater flow. The report gives the results obtained by the RIVM-team for the test case 2 of level 2. This test case relates to the study of density-dependent flow in a porous medium. It is based on the results of a heat transport experiment carried out in a Hele Shaw model and the (assumed) analogy between the equations describing heat and salt transport. The METROPOL model developed in RIVM has been employed to simulate this problem.
