Agronomic Management of Rice under Intermediate (15-50 cm) and Semi (51-100 cm) Deepwater Conditions

With the introduction of high yielding varieties, the rice production in India has increased from 30.7 million tons in 1966 to 64 million tons in 1985. The increase in yield occurred mainly in irrigated areas, but the productivity of rainfed rice areas - lowlands and uplands has not shown much improvement. In uplands, apart from cultural management including fertilizer use, water conservation practices can improve the performance of rice. In rainfed lowlands where draining of water is cost prohibitive, the problem has to be only through better crop management practices.
