摘要

The report is based on a review of Pakistan's rural water supply and sanitation sector instigated by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the World Bank in September 1987. The review was carried out by specialists in rural water engineering, hydrology, health education, medicine, community development, economics and financial analysis. The report summarizes the findings and describes six case studies of projects in Pakistan which have successfully adopted appropriate technologies and encouraged community participation. Following individual reviews of the case studies, the report includes an analysis of the role of the private sector in Pakistan's rural water and sanitation program, and a discussion of seven key issues related to development of the sector. This is followed by recommendations from the 1988 National Policy Conference on Rural Water Supply and Sanitation, including the Islamabad Declaration on a proposed government strategy.
