Innovative Design Method: A Report to the National Science Foundation, Design Theory and Methodology Program

The main objective of the research was to develop a computer-oriented innovative design method based on the principles of morphological analysis. The method is suitable for applications in innovative design and teaching of conceptual design. The information presented in the report was obtained from literature studies, from correspondence with a number of leading design methodology experts, and from direct personal contacts, or was generated by the members of the research team. Conclusions are limited to those most important from the point of view of future research needs and design research progress in the U.S. They are presented in four basic groups: innovative design and industrial progress; innovative design and design methodology; innovative design and artificial intelligence; and innovative design and engineering education.
