Nutritional Management of Chronic Diarrhea and/or Malabsorption

The report discusses the etiology of prolonged diarrhea with malabsorption in pediatric patients. Chronic diarrhea is identified as a symptom of a mixed group of disorders. The report reviews the pathophysiology of this condition, and outlines the special nutrient requirements for pediatric patients with diarrhea. A practical definition of diarrhea is recommended to aid in evaluating the efficacy of enteral formulas used for treatment.
