Role of Intermediaries in Unregulated Markets: Transportation Brokers

The deregulation of the transportation brokers since mid-1970s and the enactment of Motor Carrier Act of 1980 have created an environment for the rapid growth of the trucking brokerage industry in 1980s. The study examines the growth of the industry in response to changes in the motor carrier industry and in government deregulation. The study provides, for the first time, a profile of the industry regarding the size of the sector, business practices, and the service it provides to the shippers and the carriers. Appendices include a review of motor carrier brokerage and trucking regulation, shipper and carrier interviews, industry surveys results, and a bibliography.
