The protocol is one of six protocols commissioned by the National Center for Health Services Research and Health Care Technology Assessment (NCHSR) to develop designs for studies that will add to our knowledge of the resource use and costs of AIDS and AIDS-related complex (ARC). This protocol sets forth a methodology for obtaining detailed and uniform baseline data on the use and costs of medical, social, and support services of persons with AIDS and ARC. The report is organized into six sections: major policy and research questions and the principal goals of the proposed study; current literature and other published and unpublished data on the costs of AIDS and ARC; the major gaps in the currently available data on the costs of AIDS and ARC; the overall study design; a model for estimating current and future national costs of AIDS and ARC; the activities that will have to be undertaken to obtain the necessary data.
