This paper addresses the possible reasons for clustering. A distinction is made between intra-metropolitan and inter-metropolitan clusters. The former refers to the fact that some businesses cluster together in certain parts of metropolitan areas; the latter refers to the fact that some sectors cluster in one metropolitan area and some in another. The suburban shopping center is one example of intra-metropolitan clustering. The clustering of certain manufacturing sectors in Flint or of tourist sectors in Miami illustrates the latter.
