Subjective Uses of Wind Profiler Data in Cool Season Analysis and Forecasting. Wind Profiler Training Manual Number 4

A network of 30 wind profilers (the Wind Profiler Demonstration Network, or WPDN) is being installed in the central United States. The network provides tropospheric wind data with horizontal resolution comparable to or better than that of the existing rawinsonde network. In addition, wind data with much greater vertical resolution (as great as 350 m) and temporal resolution (1 hour) are available. The potential benefits of such a data set range from improved numerical weather prediction to more accurate nowcasting of mesoscale phenomena, for which wind data are believed to be more important than temperature data. The manual describes some uses of wind profiler data in cool-season analysis and forecasting.
