摘要

The study was concerned with evaluating thermal treatments of MSW fly ash intended to reduce the leachability of heavy metals in the fly ash. A review of the subject is given and current and potential treatments are evaluated in terms of economics and their ability to reduce heavy metal leachability. Three treatments were considered: vitrification of the ash; encapsulating the ash in a surface layer melt; and thermally binding the ash with clay. The extent of heavy metal volatilization during heating and the ability of the treatments to reduce leachability were evaluated. In addition to the experimental work, a combustion modification approach to controlling leachable metals which would reduce concentrations of leachable heavy metal species was also evaluated theoretically.
