摘要

Research and development performed in the United States totaled $406.7 billion (current dollars) in 2010, $2.9 billion above the 2009 level of $403.8 billion (table 1). The preliminary estimate for U.S. total R&D in 2011 is $414.0 billion, a further increase of $7.3 billion. This growth in U.S. R&D expenditures in 2010 and 2011 follows a $1.8 billion decline in 2009. This was only the second such decline in current dollars since the early 1950s, and it resulted chiefly from a drop in business R&D in the face of the national and international financial crisis and economic downturn that started in late 2008.
