Synopsis of a Workshop on Food Security Issues in Southern Africa. Held in Maseru, Lesotho on January 12-14, 1987

The document reports on a workshop which investigated the problems of availability and supply of food in Southern Africa. The objectives of the workshop were: To produce insights on food security and related issues in Africa; To solicit the views of policy-makers in the Southern African region on all matters relating to food security in the region; To gather up-to-date data and information that would help to forestall the emergence of a food crisis in the region; and To suggest concrete measures, both long- and short-term, on how food availability and security can be guaranteed in the region. The workshop generally agreed that food insecurity is essentially the lack of access to enough food. The Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC) developed a food security strategy which focuses on improving a number of the major components of the food supply system, namely: the production of food and agricultural products; food storage and processing; the distribution of food and other agricultural products; and the accessibility of food to the majority of people in the region.
