Design and Implementation Aspects of Remote Procedure Calls

The report is not intended as a survey in the field of remote procedure calls. It presents the reader the major principles of remote procedure call design. The authors start off by investigating those principles that seem to be most generally applicable. These principles are illustrated by a number of rather different examples. One example is the Rajdoot protocol of Shrivistava and Panzieri, that is in some respect complete. Another example is the REX protocol of Otway and Oskiewicz, that perhaps is less complete, but certainly not less elegant. Although these two protocols originated from different starting points, they do share some important characteristics. These common characteristics emerged from the common design principles.
