Subjects' speed and task performance were evaluated as a function of the processing demands of two different visual tasks in simulated driving. In addition, the variation in subjects' cognitive load was measured by a dual-task method and related to the demands of the visual tasks. The general pattern of results is discussed in relation to similar results from previous dual-task studies in real traffic. The importance of the subjects' speed variation to their task performance and cognitive load is discussed.
