The NAHB National Research Center has obtained materials, built representativeshearwalls, and structurally tested these walls generally in accordance with the racking test methods prescribed in ASTM Standard E72, 'Standard Methods of Conducting Strength Tests of Panels for Building Construction,' and ASTM Standard E564, 'Standard Method of Static Load Test for Shear Resistance of Framed Walls for Buildings.' Included in these tests were: (1) a design of an interior shearwall for manufactured housing using 5/16 in. gypsum wall board applied to both sides of the test panels; and (2) and end shearwall design with some of the walls using 5/16 in. gypsum wallboard on the interior surface and come containing nomnal 3.8 mm hardwood plywood interior finish. The primary objective of the testing program was to compare the structural performances for these shearwall types as determine by two ASTM testing methods typically used to evaluate such construction types. The report on the testing concludes that the ASTM E564 test method provides approximately 70 percent of the ultimate strength capacity that can be developed by the ASTM E72 method for the same shearwall frame when connected to a flexible support system.
