The book gives a detailed review and theoretical analysis of contemporary achievements in the study of the genetic principles of development of man and vertebrate animals. Characteristics of gene action in ontogenesis are examined, particularly the synchronous activation of gene alleles, cases of allele exclusion, interaction of gene effects and pleiotropy. Special chapters are devoted to the regulation of gene action, gene expression in early development, genetic control of cell proliferation, differentiation and also morphogenesis. Also discussed are the molecular mechanisms of embryonic induction and determination, clonal theory of cell differentiation and the origin of tumors.
