摘要

The Strong Motion Instrumentation Program (SMIP) of the California Department ofMines and Geology has obtained significant records in a number of steel structures. The objective of the research was to conduct detailed comparisons of the response of a modern steel structure predicted by current analytical methods and the response recorded by SMIP. The details of the structure are presented together with the instrumentation programs and data processing. Fundamental system identification techniques were used to identify engineering design parameters such as periods, modal shapes and damping by interpreting the recorded response to the 1987 Whittier earthquake. A realistic model of the structure was developed and was subjected to three-dimensional analysis. The analysis indicated that proper modeling of connections and floor diaphragms can lead to accurate predictions of the response. Also, current code procedures predict a period that, usually, is significantly smaller than the actual period of vibration for steel structures similar to the one studied in the report.
