Factors Related to the Water-Yielding Potential of Rocks in the Piedmont andValley and Ridge Provinces of Pennsylvania

The purpose of the investigation was to determine through statistical analysesthe factors that relate to the water-yielding potential of hydrogeologic units. Use was made of the well records in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Ground-Water Site Inventory (GWSI) data base for the Valley and Ridge, Piedmont, and to a very limited extent, the Blue Ridge provinces of Pennsylvania. The study was conducted to support the Appalachian Valleys-Piedmont Regional Aquifer System Analysis (RASA) of the USGS, which was initiated in 1988. A fundamental objective of the RASA project is to develop a physical understanding of the storage, flow, and recharge of water in the saturated subsurface environment. The results of the statistical analyses are being used to support a practical classification and regional mapping of ground-water resources, and also assist in the identification of site-specific and physically-based studies of flow dynamics.
