Carbon Black in ID-2 Wearing for Crack Reduction

The research report deals with the performance of MICROFIL 25, an asphalt microfiller. MICROFIL 25 consists of a carbon black filler in a pelletized form mixed with a fluxing oil which serves as a maltenes binder. The objective of the research was to evaluate the product's ability to extend asphalt cement and reinforce asphalt concrete pavement against reflective and thermal cracking. The project consisted of a 1-1/2 inch ID-2 wearing course that included both experimental and control test sections. The evaluation of MICROFIL 25 did not provide results that justified its use in Pennsylvania roadways as an asphalt extender or reinforcer. It is due to the fact that the use of MICROFIL 25 involved additional costs while no significant reduction in cracking was observed.
