Capillary Electrophoresis for Monitoring Carboxylic, Phenolic and Amino Acids in Bio-Processes.

A bio-process can be defined as any process that uses cells or their components tonProduce desired products. For centuries bio-processes have been utilized to producenbread, cheese, cultured milk products, soy sauce, vinegar, beer and wineneven before the existence of microorganisms was known. In these traditional bio-processes,nnatural microbial flora or a small amount of the previous fermentednmaterial was used as inoculum. Even today, good starter dough is treasured andnpassed from generation to generation. These processes are carried out with anmixed microbial culture, but in bio-process industry, the use of mixed cultures isnrare. Such applications include manufacturing of traditional foods, beverages andnalcohols, waste water treatment and bio-gas production. [1]nThe bio-based industry is a multidisciplinary industry that combines thenknowledge of biology, chemistry and chemical engineering in order to develop andnoperate its processes. The applications of biotechnology have an important role innthe food, pharmaceutical, diagnostics and chemical industries. [2] Global marketsnof some fine chemicals produced in bioprocesses are presented in Table 1.
