The ultimate goal of the Pharmalogical Sciences (PS) Program is the support of research and research training leading to increased understanding of the interactions of drugs with living systems in order to produce new, safer, and more efficacious therapeutic agents. Research in the pharmacological sciences requires an integrated knowledge of the living organisms and the drugs themselves. Thus, the Program's area of coverage is highly multidisciplinary, supporting a broad range of research aimed at improving the understanding of biological phenomena and related chemical and molecular processes involved in the actions of therapeutic drugs and anesthetics. The scope of the Program's grant portfolio ranges from synthetic chemistry and molecular pharmacology to controlled studies in human subjects. Much of the research supported by the Program unites such fields as genetics, molecular biology, chemistry, and computer science with the more traditional areas of pharmacological investigation in an effort to characterize molecular interactions and to understand their expression in humans.
