Summary of Fatal and Nonfatal Crashes Involving Medium and Heavy Trucks in 1988

The report was prepared to provide the highway safety community and the generalpublic a description of crash experience of medium and heavy trucks, trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 pounds. The report summarizes the latest annual statistics on fatal, injury and property-damage-only truck crashes, using data from available sources within the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Federal Highway Administration: NHTSA's 1988 General Estimates System; NHTSA's 1988 Fatal Accident Reporting System; FHWA's 1988 Highway Statistics; and the merged 1986 FARS/Motor Carrier Management Information System file. In addition, the report contrasts the differences between the truck crash experience, to aid truck safety problem identification.
