Development of a Rapid Heating Furnace. Final Report, May 1988-May 1990

Work accomplished throughout the initial phase of the GRI-funded program to develop a gas-fired rapid heating furnace for the reheat of metals is reported. Various sections of the report describe: (1) The investigation of current and emerging metal heating technologies; (2) The proposed process and expected benefits; (3) The bench scale apparatus developed to investigate the heating process; (4) Test results and analysis; (5) The development of a computer model to predict the temperature distribution within the heated piece; and (6) Plans for continuation of the program.
