Long-Term Outlook for the World Economy: Issues and Projections for the 1990s

Global development in the 1990s will be greatly influenced by the economicadjustment, restructuring, and market-oriented reform that took place in many countries in the 1980s. Future trends will not be an extrapolation of postwar trends. Many countries could fall behind, but many should be able to improve their economic conditions, depending on their own initiative and how global development strategy evolves. The paper identifies the likely winners and losers, explains why they will win or lose, and delineates the challenge for long-run development policy. (Copyright (c) 1990 The World Bank.)
