Archival Copies of Thermofax, Verifax, and Other Unstable Records

In 1987 as part of its long term preservation program, the National Archivescommissioned a study by the Government Printing Office (GPO) of archival electrostatic copying. The resulting report entitled, 'Archival Xerographic Copying,' discussed a number of conclusions that have practical implications for archival work. The Technical Information Paper summarizes the pertinent conclusions of the GPO report and describes procedures for conducting a simple 'peel test' to determine if a copying machine is producing an archivally acceptable copy. The complete GPO report is included as an appendix to the paper.
